Love for Leprosy
Hi everybody! For those who don’t know me, my name is Kyana. I’ve lived in India for that last 6 years, about 5 and a half years ago I met my first person effected by leprosy. He and a few others were begging on the side of the road; where we stopped and talked with them. They told us about the hardships of being under the stigma of being considered “unclean” from leprosy. Being forced to sleep where people pee, and being sent out from the city to live in a leprosy colony. They weren’t getting the medical care they needed, and were begging for just the basics i.e. food. We later then visited the Leprosy Colony wondering in what capacity we could help. There we met a nurse. She told us the biggest issue with the patients going out to beg for food, was that they would not look after their bandages, so they’re wounds were continuing to stay infected. The patients also would keep them looking “bad” in hopes it would help them receive more money.
I left the Leprosy Colony that day feeling helpless, wishing I went to school to become a nurse instead of being a hair stylist. Still the problem remained, what could I do, there had to be something. This is when I remembered my time in Africa when we had this huge chicken feast, basically it was a small chicken piece, with rice that was cooked in the chicken broth and beans. The whole village would line up for this, its was a PARTY. After living off of plain beans and rice for the last 3 months, I felt almost as excited as the villagers with their anorexic chicken piece. IT WAS SO GOOD! This was the vision of our Love for Leprosy Feasts, for us its chicken curry. We wanted to call the whole colony for a big chicken curry feast for the all the patients and their family. That night I just out an email asking for help to make it happen and in 2 days more than enough money came in for us to do it 3 times over.
I had no idea how much it would cost just a rough idea, and everyone kept telling us giving chicken would be too expensive, and they were worried we’d run out of food. That first celebration, the chicken shop owner heard about what we were doing, and gave us the chicken at almost half the cost. We had more than enough chicken curry, and everyone got to take home leftovers. Locals have helped in whatever way they could over the years. Now it’s been almost 5 years we’ve been going to the colony with our chicken curry feasts. Over the last 5 years along with our feast we’ve also been able to give clothes, shoes, food packets, and medical supplies.
So with your help we are going back to the colony to have another one of our feasts, and we’ll be handing out food packets, that consist of rice, daal (lentils), oil, and flour. Sometimes they’re are special needs with in the colony, and whatever extra donations are there we will put it towards that, or to our next feast. Help spread the word
All my love,
Kyana
