CLUPJS stands for Community-Labor United for Postal Jobs & Services. You know that wherever I go, I promote the idea and practice of community-labor unity. Whether it is postal workers and the customers who need their mail, medicines, and ballots delivered on time, or school bus workers and the children who need to get to school on time, I am there.
International solidarity is another priority, as in the above photo of me at May Day in Paris. This WFTU gathering will be a chance to observe and compare notes with unionists like the ones in France who held general strikes this Spring. Because it is taking place in South Africa, we'll meet leaders from throughout the continent as well as Brazil, Cuba and more. WFTU wants to take up how the global working class can beat back the capitalist austerity that starves us, from Puerto Rico to Haiti to Greece.
Those of us going from the U.S. can testify that resistance to racism and state repression are increasing at the same time that the resistance to low wages and super exploitation is gaining ground. As I prepare for this trip, I cannot ignore developments like the prison strike starting September 9 against slave labor--which undercuts union jobs; the gathering of Indigenous people against the Dakota Access Pipeline--which would profit the oil companies but poison the rivers we all need to live; the strike by berry pickers on both sides of the U.S. Mexico border--who all have the same boss; and the spreading of the Movement for Black Lives. With your help I can be part of encouraging trade unionists from all over the world to support these movements, because social justice unionism is the way to win.
The expenses to be covered are $1500 for round trip airfare + $300 to prepare packets of information about regional issues for each participant + $100 for supplies involved in filming portions of the proceedings + $200 for contingencies = $2100. One supporter has donated $500 off line, so that leaves a goal of $1600. Please give and share today. The workers united will never be defeated!!
