Trish Dolman hasn't added a story.
Hi there, my name is Trish Dolman and I'm a filmmaker who lives in Vancouver, Canada. I spend a lot of time in Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island surfing, running and walking on the beach with my son.
In the last few years, I really started noticing how much plastic there was on the beach - large objects, but what is most disturbing are the small, often brightly coloured pieces. Where did it all come from I wondered? The Tsunami? The Pacific Trash Vortex? These bits of plastic are actually becoming sand – the new reality of our world, blending with stone and shells on our beaches. I wondered what I could do (and no I didn't want to make a mosaic) and that's where the insipration for Jar of Sand came from. So the project is two-fold; it performs the function of slowly collecting this garbage from the beaches whilst acting as social commentary and art.
I’ve chosen to fabricate a large-scale canning jar over seven feet tall and three feet wide with a metal lid and tightening ring. There is nostalgia associated with the glass jar as a container for canning, collecting and re-using. It is also a perfect display for the layers of collected plastic. There are big pieces certainly; rubber balls, sneakers, toothbrushes and the like, but mostly what I see are these tiny pieces ground up like sand. These small pieces find their way into fish, bird and animal bellies as documented so movingly in the photographs of bird carcasses by Chris Jordan.
I'm also inviting other participants to collect plastic off the beaches and bring it to Burning Man to contribute to Jar of Sand. My intent is so also create awareness, collaboration and clean up.
I'm currently working with local non-profits such as Ocean Legacy who are dedicated to beach clean up and plastic awareness.
While I am fortunate to receive a grant from Burning Man, I'm asking for your help in raising the necessary funds to fabricate the jar (very expensive), to weld the lid and to transport it from Vancouver to Black Rock City and back (fuel and rental truck).
I'm asking eveyrone to contribute what they can and to share this page widely!
One of the main things I have learned by attending Burning Man over the course of 18 years is that human beings have the capactiy for extraordinary change and to create amazing art and technology. We created plastic and we will create a solution to clean it up and to replace it with a much more sustainable solution.
Jar of Sand is vessel for all those thoughts, hopes and dreams.
