We (Dorite and Eva) have been working as volunteer English teachers at Ritsona Refugee Camp in Central Greece since September and it has been a deeply touching and challenging experience for both of us.

Like most of you, we were moved by the plight of refugees and hoped we could play our part by doing what we know best (teaching!). We soon realized that for many of our students attending our English lessons meant much more than simply learning a new language. Indeed, beyond education, we found that our classes help our students establish a daily routine and provide them with a safe space where they can focus and regroup. English classes remind them of their self-worth, where once again they are seen as people and not just refugees. To them, these classes represent so much more than just English lessons.

However, even though all volunteers come here on a self-funded basis, money is really scarce. To be able to keep teaching and supporting the residents of Ritsona Camp, we have an ongoing need for both experienced teachers and funds.

This is why we are asking for your help today.

We lack appropriate course books and teaching resource books and the printing of learning materials for our students is constrained by the cost of ink and paper. We badly need another whiteboard and can only dream of a much needed third classroom.

Today, we are launching this fundraising page in the hope that we can ensure the continuity and growth of I AM YOU’s work here.
