Darrin Huzar hasn't added a story.
Darrin was born with polycystic kidney disease. At a young age, he made many visits to Children's Hospital with his older brother Mike; who was also born with polycystic kidney disease.
In 2004, Darrin's kidneys failed and he required dialysis to live. Many family members came forward to see if they were a match to donate a kidney to Darrin. Darrin's cousin Sandy was a perfect match.
In 2007, Darrin received a kidney transplant. When Darrin recovered, he was able to go back to school to become an education assistant and then an aboriginal education worker for the school district in Prince George. For the past five years, Darrin has been lucky enough to work in four different schools in the district with amazing staff and students.
In January, 2015, Darrin became very ill with a sinus infection,
pneumonia and sepsis. He seemed to recover, but three weeks later, he
ended back in the hospital with severe infections growing in his
blood. The infections were very hard on his body, especially his
transplanted kidney and his liver which also has the polycystic
disease and cirrhosis. In this time, Darrin's gall bladder was removed
and he has lost over fifty pounds due to his illness over the past
four months. We thought Darrin was getting better, but he had a major
setback and ended up in ICU for the third time. At this time, his
doctors felt that he had too many setbacks and was airlifted to
Vancouver General Hospital on April 27th. On May 4th, the specialist
said they couldn't wait and needed to do reconstructive surgery on his
biliary system to save his life. The surgery was successful and Darrin
spent four days in ICU and is now in the step down unit on the
surgical floor at VGH.
His wife Brandi has been on a compassionate care leave to be by Darrin's side on this journey. She feels blessed for each day that she has Darrin in her life and for their family and friends that have supported them every step of the way.
Please do what you can to help these two wonderful people who have been dealt a hard hand.
