Our family just adopted Pier an Explosive Detection Dog that has cancer in his mouth.  Instead of having the organization that had him prior take the tumor out and removing nearly all of his upper jaw resulting in possible euthanization due to an inability to perform duties OR they euthanize him because the cost to treat would be too great, we have decided to go out of pocket to attempt Hyperthermia Radiation therapy. His handler is allowing us to adopt because he is unable to give Pier the life he deserves, filled with kids, love, and attention.

I am creating this page in order to reach out to those that may want to help with this process.  My husband is active duty and was trusted by the handler to see to it that Pier gets the best treatment possible.

We have the privilege of adopting Explosive Detection Dog Pier ID# M203 / 8 1/2 yr old Yellow Lab following 8yrs of dedicated service due to having cancer (Maxillary Fibro Sarcoma). In his picture you can see the tumor pushing out his snout a little bit on his right side. For the first time in his life he gets to be a dog.  He has never slept in a bed or on the carpet by the fire. He has never just been a lapdog on the couch. He has slept in a kennel his whole life. He only knows work. He only knows justice and action. He has no fear but is chock full of loyalty and pride. His reward at work is love and affection (and his Kong)...he is about to live a life full of reward! We are so proud to have Pier in our family and pay him back for saving countless lives and working countless hours and days to get the job done. Pier...Mission Complete.

With his reward being play you can see that attempting to remove his upper jaw (tumor is located right front by his snout) would be selfish of us, he would be miserable.  After researching his cancer I found that treatment with hyperthermia radiation therapy might be an effective way to shrink the tumor decreasing the pain and allowing Pier to have a happy life however long that might be.
