Sadie May hasn't added a story.
Hello! My name is Sadie, and I'm a receptionist at Prytania Veterinary Hospital in New Orleans, LA. I have a cat of my own, and for the past two years I have also been feeding a few of the feral cats on my street. About six months ago, a large tuxedo cat with a funny looking face found his way to our recovery house and joined in on the meals. He was very vocal and determined around dinner time, but it seemed it might be difficult for him to eat the dry kibble. I offered him some soft canned food one night and he inhaled it. He was a smitten kitten for that wet food and wouldn't have any of the tough dry kibble anymore! Unlike most of the feral cats, he never seem afraid of humans. After a few months on our street, he really started warming up to my house-mates and me. He would let us pet him, rub up against our legs, and he even started rolling over on his back for belly scratches.
I chose the name Fat Lip because it looked just like he was smuggling grapes up under his whiskers. Eventually it became difficult for him to eat the soft food as well, and a terrible, rotten odor started coming from his mouth. I realized something serious was going on. I decided I had to at least take the first step and bring him to Prytania Vet so a doctor could take a closer look.
We started with a physical exam. After one look at his mouth the veterinarian said Fat Lip would need oral surgery ASAP. We ran lab work and he tested positive for intestinal parasites: hookworms and giardia. He was treated with a dewormer, fully vaccinated, and his blood work came back great! Just a couple of days later he had his oral surgery! His mouth was so abscessed, swollen, rotten, and infected that there were no teeth that could be saved. They all had to go.
Having a whole mouth of teeth extracted sounds pretty daunting, but just two days later he was chasing a cotton mouse around my living room floor. He's been recovering incredibly well! The swelling has gone down and he has the most handsome, sweet face. His personality is blossoming into the lover he was always meant to be. His favorite spots are on your chest, in your lap, or curled up right next to you. He is so much happier and healthier. I've never met a genuinely grateful cat until I met Fat Lip.
I wish I could keep him but due to my own circumstances, I'm not able to keep him with me. I currently have him indoors while he recovers and until we can find him a loving home. If you or someone you know is looking for the most handsome, easy going, love muffin please contact me or Prytania Veterinary Hospital. He's a 7-year-old neutered male. He is now fully vaccinated, healthy, toothless, and an incredibly sweet, deserving baby.
We have the most amazing Veterinarians and staff at Prytania Vet. Everyone truly has such a strong passion for helping animals. After meeting Fat Lip and learning his story, two of our veterinarians, our dental technician, and one of our veterinary technicians all offered to donate their time and expertise and take on Fat Lips life saving oral surgery. That being said, I am still responsible for paying Fat Lips' remaining balance which is why I am seeking donations. All donations will be used to cover costs for all medications and equipment used, vaccines and 3 nights of hospital boarding during the surgery, totaling $800.00.
Every little bit helps, thank you so much!
