Do you remember Mario?
If you ever stayed at Meliá Cayo Coco, chances are you met Mario. For 27 years, he was one of those familiar faces who made a vacation feel like coming home — guests returned year after year, and Mario was there. As chief steward, he was the one looking after the buffet throughout every service — constantly restocking it and keeping it spotless. That's where most of you will remember him from.
Today, Mario is the one who needs help.
His mother — the only family he has left — is fighting a tumour near her liver. She is hospitalized at the National Oncology Institute in Havana, far from their home near Morón. Major surgery is planned for around November 20, and it may be moved up if her condition requires it.
For weeks now, Mario has not left her side. He put his whole life on hold to be with her, day and night. At first, with no money to spare, he slept in a park across from the hospital. He now rents a small room nearby, so he can be within reach of his mother at all times. Mario is diabetic himself, and he has to look after his own health while caring for her.
We are Pierre and Sylvie Beauregard, from Beloeil, Quebec. Like many of you, we first met Mario as guests of the hotel — and he became a friend, a member of the family. Since this ordeal began, we have been helping as best we can, but the needs are more than we can carry alone: lodging near the hospital, food, transportation, and everything it will take to support his mother through surgery and recovery.
Every donation, large or small, will go directly to these expenses. Funds are collected here in Canada and sent to Mario on a regular basis, as we already do. We will post updates on this page in the weeks ahead.
If Mario ever made you smile on vacation, now is the time to return some of that kindness. Please give if you can — and share this page with other Meliá Cayo Coco guests you know.
With heartfelt thanks,
Pierre and Sylvie
