Sabrina Brosnan hasn't added a story.
We are fundraising to support Jacqueline, a senior who like many seniors these days, became homeless due to the housing market and a landlord's greed.
Jacqueline ended up living in her car last year and as she is 73, she developed a very serious blood clot, which about 1/3 of seniors develop per year, and the number is higher for seniors who've had Covid, which Jacqueline, luckily, didn't.
Jacqueline's adult daughter was also living in their car at the time and found a CAPREIT apartment for them to rent. Unfortunately, her daughter lost her job and has been looking for a new one since February. Though they had been in communication with CAPREIT constantly about this, the management company served them a 10-day notice. Though CAPREIT withdrew it from the RTB, the arbitrator still allowed the landlord to demand possession. Jacqueline is having this reviewed, but in the meantime, she needs help to pay her back rent and continue living inside.
Jacqueline's daughter has been waging a 4+ year fight against CRA regarding the CERB/CRB benefits. Now, she has to go to court over it, all while not receiving her tax refunds or GSTs for over 4 YEARS. This is a major reason these two couldn't pay their rent when Jacqueline's daughter lost her job. Her daughter is also a cancer survivor but still is giving her all to care for her mom.
Some 18 million people got a tax refund in 2021, neither of these women did nor has Jacqueline's daughter received one since 2020.
While Jacqueline's daughter has been looking for work and fighting CRA, CAPREIT has decided to evict these two, even though they don't have the money to move anywhere but back into their car. This is literally putting a death sentence onto Jacqueline's life.
CAPREIT's CEO has given many interviews stating he's committed to helping end homeless in Canada, but it certainly doesn't seem like it from what Jacqueline and her daughter are dealing with after only 5 MONTHS of living in their apartment.
In The 5 months that they have been living in their apartment, Jacqueline and her daughter have had to deal with a lot of issues that should have been dealt with before they even moved in. They didn't have a working fridge or stove for over a month and a half, the toilet paper holder wasn't even hung up and the unit hadn't been cleaned. Though the unit isn't perfect, they still took it because it was a roof over their heads. Now, it looks like they won't have a roof much longer without support.
You can provide support to a senior that has more than beaten the odds.
The blood clots that nearly took Jacqueline's life, are not the first brush with death that Jacqueline has faced. Nearly 20 years ago, Jacqueline was on a Handy-Dart when the driver had road rage and caused an accident, breaking Jacqueline's back, jaw joints and shattering her teeth. All the doctors told her she'd be dead in a maximum of 3 yeats, but Jacqueline wouldnt be deterred. She and her daughter worked tirelessly so that Jacqueline could not only walk but dance away from the naysayers.
All this can crashing down when Jacqueline had to move into her car and developed a blood clot.
The treatment, or lack there of, from Surrey Memorial Hospital that Jacqueline received, has not only meant she has to be closely monitored by her daughter, but she was also crippled in her left hand and arm. As an artist and chef, that means she can never go back to work.
We are seeking support for these 2 to remain housed as the housing market isn't friendly to seniors, disabled or low-income individuals. That Jacqueline and her daughter have a place to live that they like, have worked hard to maintain and that Jacqueline's daughter has found a job that she will be starting soon, we are asking for help to allow these women to stay in their housing and maintain the health of a senior survivor, who still has a lot of life in her.
Please donate what you can, share this fundraiser and take care of your senior family members. We only have a limited time of our loved ones, we never know when we will lose them, so treasure each moment with them before they are gone.
UPDATE!!!
These 2 women have been working with the government to cover the back owed rent and stay in their housing.
The management company utterly refuses to work out any arrangement for these 2 to remain housed in their unit.
Even worse; the company demands that the women have to move out by May 13th, and to extend that long, the women must sign away any right to sue the company in the future, for sat not having a working fridge and stove for almost 2 months and sign a gag order, so they cannot even speak about their experiences.
These women cannot get legal assistance and have no way to move to a new unit in the time frame the company demands.
Even though the daughter will have a new job by months end, they still must find a new rental as the company won't budge at all.
If you can support these women's fight for stable housing or share this page, it would be greatly appreciated.
