Jacinda is one of 100 hens who came to Hen Habor from a factory egg fam in 2013. As one of the most outgoing hens, she quickly became a favorite of the flock's main rooster, BCMM (above in video), who spends his days digging up worms and other snacks for her, while guarding her vigilantly.

Sadly, like many of her sisters, Jacinda developed a terrible, fatal condition common to hens bred for excessive laying: huge masses of rotting egg material stuck in her oviduct.

When Jacinda fell ill one day, her rooster was so distraught that he would not leave her side. When we picked her up to take her to the vet, he flew at us with his talons, valiantly trying to stop us. For days while she was in recovery, he moped in a corner, inconsolable.

Luckily for Jacinda, she made it back from her life-saving surgery (scroll down for images of her harrowing surgery!) with her health restored. Today, she is back to her plucky, happy-go-lucky self.

However, her vet bill was huge, and we need help paying if off so we can continue to provide for Jacinda and her long-suffering sisters.

Modern laying hens are extremely prone to the type of deadly condition suffered by Jacinda; about one-third of Hen Harbor's residents are on hormonal implants to stop them from laying eggs into their shredded, ruptured oviducts -- which would kill them.

Although the implants are costly, they are less costly than surgery, which is the inevitable fate of every hen who goes without her life-saving implant. Please help Hen Harbor continue to care for the feathery angels like Jacinda who live at the sanctuary.
