Alvin Chambers, better known as Big Al or Alvie, is a 39 year-old man from Mishawaka, IN, involved in a vehicular accident on July 5, 2013 headed to White Cloud, MI for a weekend dirt bike trip with his two friends. Alvin is the father of two daughters, Naomi and Cheyenne, and husband of Sandy Chambers.
Al is a big fan of everything and anything outdoorsy, ranging from working on his dirt bikes and motorcycles to disc golfing, fishing, camping, but his favorite hobby is definitely dirt biking. The guys were just 7 miles from the trail head in Manistee National Forest where they would have spent the holiday weekend riding and camping in Al’s RV, lovingly named the Sanlvin (Sandy + Alvin) Spirit of Adventure by the Chambers family, when they were hit head on by a SUV.
The RV, pulling the guys’ trailer and dirt bikes, rolled, skidded, and caught on fire. Friends and local authorities managed to pull Al from the burning camper and later extinguish the flames. Al’s injuries were the most severe of the three in the RV, with a broken arm needing plating, a broken vertebrae, deep gashes to both legs leaving the bone exposed, and additional cuts and bruises. Additionally, to free himself from the dashboard of the burning camper, Al was forced to break his left leg. The passengers of the RV suffered rib fractures, spinal fractures, and cuts and bruises.
Anybody that knows Al knows that he would never ask for handouts, but that he would personally give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Within the first day of being in the hospital, all bandaged up and stiffened by his neck brace, he was brought to tears to know that the other driver was in critical condition. He fussed with his nurse to avoid receiving the appropriate amount of pain medication wanting the least dosage possible. He continuously teaches his kids right versus wrong, and preaches the desperate need to always do the right thing. His strong will, sense of humor, and unfaltering sense of strength are pulling the family through this sad time, but the medical expenses are daunting without health insurance coverage, or guaranteed coverage from the other driver. In addition Al is unable to work and has no income until he is able to return to work which could be October or November, in the meantime the family is struggling to pay their bills.
The family is doing everything they can to make Al’s homecoming and stay comfortable, and to keep outlooks positive for the future, but they are asking for monetary donation to help cover the medical costs incurred. Any donation big or small is appreciated as we move forward on Al’s road to recovery.
