I'm a single mom raising my 9-year-old son right here in beautiful Penticton. I work at Service BC, but currently, my family is facing a significant challenge that could lead us to lose everything we hold dear. I truly appreciate you taking the time to read our story.
Our Unexpected Housing Challenge
In early February, we endured a heartbreaking and very confusing housing dispute. Despite having a court order that allowed us to stay in our apartment, my landlords managed to get a writ to remove us almost immediately, leaving us feeling lost and bewildered.
On February 13th, we unexpectedly found ourselves locked out. In an instant, our belongings were moved outside, and we scrambled to pack everything we owned into a rented U-Haul truck, desperately trying to keep our things safe while we searched for a new place to call home.
Our Belongings Are in Limbo
Due to the sudden nature of our eviction, the costs associated with the U-Haul have quickly become overwhelming. At this moment, U-Haul has taken possession of the truck, which contains all our personal items. To make matters worse, they are unable to disclose the location of the truck, which prevents me from checking on our precious belongings.
They are asking for $2,000($500 in town fees) in accumulated rental and storage fees. If I can’t come up with this amount, they may auction off or discard everything we own—our clothes, our furniture, my son’s essential items, and all our cherished family memories.
Every day, I work tirelessly to support us, and I'm navigating this situation legally. However, I know the wheels of justice turn slowly, while U-Haul's fees continue to escalate. Right now, I simply don’t have the means to gather that $2,000.
