Nicole Barley hasn't added a story.
Well it all started senior year of high school. At first it was just heartburn, then it progressed to nausea which made me miss many days of school. I still graduated with honors yay but things took a turn for the worst when I couldn't get off the toilet for hours on end several days a month with a basket in my lap because (sorry if this is TMI but needs to be said) I was puking my guts out at the same time as what my husband began calling "butt piss" wouldn't stop. This went on until my doctor prescribed Prilosec for a few weeks. Then to my amazement it stopped and I thought it was for good because I went a whole 2 YEARS without a single incident.
Then one day (I think around Halloween) I got these really nasty burps that tasted & smelled like rotten eggs (no it was not from candy because I didn't eat any yet) followed by nausea and I just knew this was going to be a bad day and within 2hrs it happened again. This time it was so bad my husband had to take me to the hospital to be put on an iv drip because I was so badly dehydrated and they gave me something to stop the vomiting and diarrhea and the nausea. After they felt I was well enough (drinking broth and eating jello) they sent me home. As soon as I got home I made an appointment to have a colonoscopy and endoscopy done to see if they could determine if anything in my intestines was causing this. I also go back on Prilosec but this time it did nothing for me.
So after the colonoscopy/endoscopy testing a few months later, they told me they found nothing that could explain my symptoms. So after getting nowhere there I asked my doctor if they could do some blood tests to help me determine the cause. I'm not sure what testing they did but nothing helped. Then I went another year or two without incident and it turned up again around my birthday one year and this time I almost died. My husband got up out of bed wondering where I was and found me unconscious on the floor next to the toilet that was pull of vomit. He carried me to the car and drove me to the ER and again they hooked me up to IVs and gave me something to stop the diarrhea, vomiting and nausea. I remember going in and out of sleep and overheard the doctor or nurse telling my husband if he would have found me just a few minutes later they may not have been able to help me.
That was the turning point for me. As soon as I got home I was determined to find out what was wrong with me. Since doctors were useless I went to the internet to seek out people suffering the same symptoms as me. At first I determined that it must be a sulfur sensitivity and tried to stick to low sulfur foods. It seemed to make a difference, as I managed a few more years symptom free.
But inevitably it came back again and again I ended back up in the ER last year (2017) in August and this time nothing they gave me seemed to help and worse of all my diarrhea was so severe my husband had to hold a bedpan under me because it wouldn't stop & at the same time as I kept puking into another bedpan (TMI sorry)! It was one of the most embarrassing miserable situations I've ever gone through. But this time my nurse gave me a bit of extra information I didn't have before: she said my blood sugar levels were "unusually high for someone who just suffered from diarrhea & vomiting and this level of dehydration!"
When I got home I was even more determined to find out what was wrong
with me. This time I added high blood sugar levels into the searchbar
along with the normal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, sulfur burps
and came upon an article about a gentleman that went through all the
same symptoms as me (even down to his wife finding him passed out on
the bathroom floor near the toilet). It turns out his doctor labeled
it: episodic diabetic gastroparesis. I think I now have a name but I
need to do some more testing to be sure.
I have been in and out of all types of doctor's offices,
nutritionist, etc. And I have yet to have a single helpful result. But
searching the net has proven to give me much better results. And now I
have a few at home tests I'd like to try to eliminate any other
potential issues that may be causing me all these problems. In fact
even when I'm not sick I'm still dealing with constant fatigue and
bloating. I sometimes can't even get myself out of bed and sleep 12+
hrs and I'm still exhausted.
So I really hope this can fill in the blanks and help me move forward on my path to wellness and my overall health. The only problem is because of my illness I have no job, and my husband just started his new job and we can't afford these tests. So that is why I joined this site. Please help.
