A doctor's mental health journey 

Hi, I’m María Gracia, Diego Benavides’ sister. I’m here reaching out for the help I can’t give my brother on my own.

My brother has been a doctor for seven years. He has struggled with depression for a long time, but that’s never taken away his empathy or his desire to help others. Over the years, I’ve seen him suffer from exhaustion and the emotional burden that comes with caring for people in need.

Unfortunately, his empathy led to a penalty — he was fined for issuing medical leave notes when he genuinely believed his patients needed them. This situation pushed him into a deep depression.

He’s now turning to me as a last resort, telling me he needs to rest for at least a month. But if he stops working, he won’t have the means to support his family — his wife, son, and our mother — since he’s the only one with a paid job.

I wish I had the money to help him, but I’m also going through financial difficulties. That’s why I’m reaching out to you today.

Today, from the bottom of my heart, I’m asking for your support to help my brother take the time he desperately needs to rest and begin healing. His mental health has been deeply affected, and right now, what he needs most is the chance to breathe, recover, and feel that he’s not alone.

Mi hermano es un médico hace 7 años, siempre ha tenido problemas de depresión, pero eso no le ha quitado su empatía y deseo de ayudar a los demás. A lo largo de los años lo he visto sufrir por agotamiento y la carga emocional que implica tratar con personas que necesitan ayuda. Lamentablemente, su empatía lo llevó a recibir una multa por otorgar licencias médicas cuando él realmente lo veía necesario, esto lo llevó a caer en una grave depresión. Él se acerca a mí como una última opción, me dice que necesita descansar por al menos un mes, pero si deja de trabajar, no tendrá el dinero para mantener a su familia compuesta por su esposa, hijo y nuestra madre, ya que es el único que posee un trabajo pagado. Quisiera tener dinero, pero yo misma poseo problemas económicos, es por esto que recurro a ustedes hoy.

Hoy, desde el fondo de mi corazón, les pido que me ayuden a ayudar a mi hermano, para que pueda tomarse el descanso que necesita desesperadamente para poder sanar. Su salud mental ha sido afectada duramente y necesita un respiro, recuperarse y sentir que no está solo en esta batalla contra la depresión.
