Help new Albanian family this holiday season
It’s that wonderful time of the year – that time of the year when we have a chance to be grateful for all that we have.
Last night, I learned about a family of three (mother and two children – four and five years old boys – that find themselves without a home this holiday season. I learned about this family when a friend picked them up from the police station during Thanksgiving weekend and took them home. They were hungry and dirty. With tears dripping down her face, all the mom could ask for was to feed her children. It was an unbearable situation for my friend and his family so they decided to take them in until they found a place to live.
The three of them came from Albania about a month ago (the dad was denied a visa for some reason that I don’t know). Like any immigrant parent, she and her husband made the sacrifice like my parents did in order to give her children a better life. They stayed with a relative and they were kicked out to the curb after a month. The mother is 29 and does not know English. She knows no one and has no source of income. At the moment, she’s living at the Teqe (mosque) in Taylor and the teqe has agreed to pay a month of her rent. Community members are helping with clothing and food. A local business where an Albanian works is sponsoring the family this holiday season and we’re grateful for that.
I’m writing this note to you because my goal is to raise about $1,000 to ensure that the mother and her two children have a roof over their heads after this month. I’m hoping that you can make a gift of $25 or $50 or more if you can to help pay her rent for 2 months. We’re working on helping her find a job, we’re working on connecting her with the County Community Service Agency, and we’re looking to register her kids for HeadStart. Your gift would mean a lot to me and this family. I can’t imagine being in this woman’s shoes. What I can imagine is all of us coming together, chipping in, and making sure that this family isn’t out in the cold especially during this time of the year.
