My mom Rosalie Fox of Long Island Bahamas is a Diabetic and also has Hypertension (High Blood Pressure). She is 65 years old and has experienced many complications from these diseases over the years, including very bad cataracts in both eyes. Because of this, she experienced very poor vision and made numerous trips to public hospital eye doctors in Nassau to try and remedy the situation. After several visits to various doctors, they told her she needed cataract surgery.
When the first surgery was attempted on the right eye, she developed an allergic reaction to the anesthesia used, and her eyes became swollen and extremely red, so surgery had to be stopped before completion to avoid any major complications. Eventually they had to perform the cataract surgery with local anaesthetic only and it was a painful process, but she endured it, and the surgery was successful. This surgery cost over $7,000, and we had to seek assistance from donors to help pay for it. Several months after surgery was attempted on the left eye which was the worst and there was complications during surgery again and it took a lot longer than usual. This also cost over $7,000 that we asked donors to help with.
Shortly after that, surgery complications started, and she had several issues that required additional laser surgeries and procedures that cost thousands of more dollars. After several attempts from various doctors in Nassau they were unable to resolve the issues and referred her to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami to be checked further by specialists.
My mom doesn't have insurance, and between the flights, accommodations, hospital bills, and two laser surgeries, the bills have been adding up quickly. She now has to come back in March and get another surgery/procedure done to put a special tube in to drain fluids out of the eye to relieve the very high pressure.
Seen in screenshots below, estimations bring it to over $39,000, and although the hospital has worked out a little over $29,000, the balance on the estimate is over $10,000 and is not the final cost so it can be even more. So with this, we are looking for donations again to assist with this, and any amount you can donate, big or small, will help tremendously.
