I believe it is our vulnerability that connects us as humans and am committed to remaining authentic to my values as a Registered Social Worker and yoga instructor in advocating for equality, inclusivity, and human rights in our community. I commit to using my platform as a City Councillor to elevate the voices of marginalized individuals in our community.
I believe as part of meaningful Reconciliation, development conversations need to include local Indigenous people and that the onus is on City Hall to connect with individuals in the community to reach out and listen to their voices, acknowledging that not everybody has the privilege and power to use their voice.
I bring 20 years experience in human services including at the
front line level, as well as management positions in non profits and
Fraser Health Authority. Additionally, I was a post secondary
instructor for 7 years. Most notably, I was chosen as the team
leader for the Vancouver ICM team for the Mental Health Commission
of Canada's At Home/Chez Soi Project, the world's largest research
demonstration project on ending homelessness which was instrumental
in creating Housing First policies in Canada. Most recently, I
worked as a crisis clinician serving suicidal youth in our
community. Not only do I have the experience to qualify as a city
councilor, I hold a commitment to equality, inclusivity, and human
rights to bring safety to residents.
As a home owner and small business owner in Port Moody, Dawn is
highly invested in the future of our community.
Key Issues:
- Building connection and community with intention to create safety and address mental health, substance use, and other social issues in our community.
- As Port Moody grows, building a strong foundation for physical and emotional safety, particularly focusing on seniors, youth, BIPOC community members, and those living in poverty.
- Prioritizing affordable housing that creates homes, not just housing, utilizing evidence based tools to address those facing barriers to market housing.
- Supporting community events and opportunities to gather, particularly those related to the Arts, reclaiming the "City of the Arts" in a meaningful way.
- Addressing traffic in a tangible and realistic way that is cost effective, realistic, and time efficient for residents.
- Addressing climate change on a municipal level.
- Genuine Reconciliation effort for the representatives of the First People of Port Moody (Say-Mah-Mit) Kwikwetlem, Musqueam, Squamish, Stó:lō and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations by including them in important decisions around land use.
- Strengthening relationships with key stakeholders and partners
such as the Province of BC, Fraser Health Authority, Translink,
Metro Vancouver, and local First Nations communities.
-
Advocacy to expand exemptions for the ESA proposed changes to
include situations where there is no change in density, protecting
single family home properties, while requiring new developments to
pay for assessments to the impact on our environment.
Dawn's strong educational and administrative background, in addition to her commitment to evidence based practices ensure that her representation of residents in Port Moody will be thoughtful and driven by thoughtful community engagement and input, objective evidence based best practices, and challenging the status quo for a better community.
