SOLICITING DONATIONS FOR THE   ENDANGERED AFRICAN DONKEY

Equus africans asinus IN RIFT VALLEY AND WESTERN KENYA IN 2020.

My bio data; I am Dr. David Manguya Lusega, a Kenyan by birth, born in Kakamega County in 1965.  By profession I am a Lecturer of university Eldoret School of natural resources, Department of fisheries and aquatic sciences since 1994 to date.  Undertook my BSc and MSc Industrial Fisheries, Osmania University, Andhra Pradesh State, India and Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, South India respectively. PhD Environmental Health, Moi University, Kenya. I am passionate about fish, animals and sustainable conversation and management of environment and Natural resources and I am widely travelled in the world.

To come to my appeal for donation on the welfare of the African donkey or ass (Equus africans asinus) according to the African network for animal welfare, our precious drought animals shall be extinct by 2023. Follow my justification from the global perspective as underlined below.

ANECTODE; (DONKEYS SYMBOLIZE PEACE AND HUMILITY)

Jesus Christ the messiah and savior of the world made a triumphant entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey (Luke 19:28-40, Deuteronomy 21:3, Numbers 19:2 and Zechariah 9:9). Another pretty wild animal that closely resembles the domesticated donkey is the African zebra.

It is believed in Kenyan communities that donkey milk has a lot of curative and medicinal properties. For example, many communities believe that donkey milk cures tuberculosis (TB).

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE AND DONKEY POPULATION

In 1992, the world had 41 million donkeys, China had 11 million of this, Kenya in 2009 had 1,832,519 donkeys and things looked up. The year 2009, Kenyan donkey population had fallen down to 600,000, China from 11 million to 3 million. Kenya meat act 1999, increased donkey from drought tasks to meat for human consumption and export. Additionally China demand for donkey skins, bones and meat resulted in Kenya opening 4 abattoirs as listed below,

DONKEY SLAUGHTER HOUSES

  1. Goldox in Mogotio, Baringo County Kenya,
  2. Bright Star ,Maraiguru, Naivasha , Nakuru County, Kenya,
  3. Zirzha, Turkana County, Kenya and
  4. Futai Kityoko , Machakos County.

FACTORS FOR DONKEY EXTINCTION IN KENYA

The capacity for slaughter of each of these abattoirs is 1200 donkeys a day. This decimated the Kenyan donkey population. Jog your memory down memory lane, 600,000 donkeys is a 2019 data, 2020 is anybody guess it could be less than 100,000 due to the under listed seasons.

EJAO FACTOR

Other than meat, EJAO is a traditional medicine derived from boiling donkey skins to make a traditional gel for preparation of expensive skin pharmaceuticals, powder; gel also incorporated in Novel and premier foods that sale for a fortune in the international market, skin care products, night creams that can be ordered online from remote locations globally for a fortune.

PRICES

This drove the Kenyan prices for a donkey from USD120-150. The skins command USD 150-180 meaning that skins commanded more price than the donkeys. This prompted people to steal other people’s asses, to satisfy the EJAO market. Cross boarder rustling or theft of donkeys has been reported from the East African region.

DONKEY TASKS

Donkeys are very hardy animals and the world over they operate  in inhospitable extreme circumstances in temperate  mountainous sloppy, slippery terrain, hot, semi-arid and arid climates, without roads on narrow tracks and paths. Such donkey can haul 500 to 1000 kg (0.5 – 1.0 ton) more than a pickup truck load that is tantamount to abuse of these creatures. Besides undertaking these heavy odious tasks, they are beaten thoroughly with crude weapons which inflict wounds all over the body daily, no medical attention, no breaks for drinking water, feeding, resting, etc.

DISEASES

Rabies, Anthrax, Foot and Mouth disease, Worms , Malnutrition, Vitamin Deficiency, lack of attention to their soles ( hooves) and Zoonotic diseases like Rift Valley Fever, Ebola, Hytadit, Corona, etc. are common place due to their close interaction with human beings are some of the challenges that this donation appeal seeks to address including vaccination.

APPEAL AND SOLICITING

My appeal, to donors, is precipitated and occasioned by the above essay coupled with inhuman handling of these kind hearted, diligent, hardworking donkeys and crude slaughter methods without stunning guns, they are simply bludgeoned by blunt objects on the head with painful death, poor welfare and abuse, thrashed with crude weapons as they labor daily, misuse, inhumane traditional practices, poor husbandry, poor or no vet services

COMMUNITIES TRAINNING

Therefore I intent to train communities in Rift Valley and Western Regions of Kenya On animal welfare , proper nutrition , reduction in suffering now and into the future, proper husbandry , education for donkeys owners , law enforcement, train various school children to inculcate animal and donkey welfare , teach donkey owners  Kenyan laws cap 360 of the traffic act help alleviate the various grisly traffic accidents as they tow carts , jackets  on busy Kenyan roads , train them on how to construct donkey houses , abettors, improved balanced feeding habits and better friendly handling  of donkey, drinking points, etc.

BUDGET

From the above, I solicit for USD 731,500 and believe they shall impact positively in restoration and conservation of the quickly extinct species by 2023 and with greater accountability and transparency intent to utilize hard earned funds on the following.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

Shall be very indebted to each and every donor to this noble course, shall personally thank each and every one of them from the depth of my heart, strongly believe this efforts shall bare fruits and our donkey numbers shall compliment my efforts is that Kenya and other African countries have banned slaughter and export of donkey products this year 2020. The cabinet secretary of Fisheries, livestock, veterinary services and agriculture fired the first salvo towards conservation of the donkey population in February, 2020 in Kenya. Therefore, my effort is to complement in the welfare and conservations of Equus africanus asinus species in my region in Kenya. Furthermore, I encourage the donors to visit the project and witness the success of the project. I thank them in advance for their generous donations to this worthy noble cause.
