Matthew Combs hasn't added a story.
Winnie is a sweet little girl that has had one obstacle after another
during her puppyhood. Winnie and her siblings arrived as young puppies
from an Oklahoma shelter. Winnie was filled with intestinal worms,
fleas and ticks when she arrived in the shelter. Two days after her
arrival to the Steele County Humane Society, Winnie collapsed and was
in respiratory and cardiac distress. Winnie was severely anemic
because of the parasites in her body. She received an emergency blood
transfusion from one of the veterinary technician’s dogs. Winnie
survived and slowly began the long process of building back strength.
For the next 2 months she battled respiratory infection due to the
damage of the parasites. Once again she pushed through and eventually
was able to find her adoptive mom.
I have adopted Winnie. 3
weeks later Winnie started to show some very odd behaviors. Winnie was
confused, falling over and drooling. I rushed her to the emergency
clinic where she received supportive care and diagnostics. Winnie was
diagnosed with a portosystemic shunt. A liver shunt is a condition
where the normal flow of blood, to and through the liver, is markedly
reduced or absent. Normally, blood returning from the puppy's
digestive tract is routed to the liver through the portal vein. The
blood flows through the liver and then exits the liver and joins the
venous blood flowing back to the heart. A liver shunt is a blood
vessel that connects the portal vein with the main systemic blood
stream. This causes the blood to bypass the liver. Without adequate
blood flow to the liver, the puppy's body cannot thrive. Winnie was
then referred to a specialty clinic for further testing and options.
Winnie will require surgery to close the shunt that is present.
Without this surgery Winnie may not make it past a year of age. With
surgery she should live a close to normal life. The surgery Winnie
requires is performed only at a specialty clinic and the estimate is
from $900 to $1200. I'm hoping that together we can raise the funds to
help her new owner be able to provide the care Winnie needs.
