Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people from ages 10 until 24 and gay, lesbian or bisexual youths are four times more likely to commit suicide than their heterosexual counterparts, while questioning youth are three times more likely, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control. Their 2011 study reported that one out of every six high school students nationwide seriously considered suicide in 2010. In a Harris Interactive study on bullying, students said two of the three top reasons students were bullied were actual or perceived sexual identity and gender expression. Even just in North Carolina, 62% of teens heard negative remarks about gender nonconformism and 64% of LGBT students experienced sexual harassment. Only 61% of those students reported it to school staff, and only 20% said of those who reported it said that staff intervened effectively.
I've been asked why I would continue with this event after the felicitous and groundbreaking legalization of same-sex marriage in North Carolina last October. Even in light of this, my cause is still relevant; perhaps more than ever. My concern isn't with the political debates. My concern is with the aftermath of those debates, and with those listening to attacks on the LGBT community. Racism and hate crimes ddn't stop with Loving v. Virginia was passed. Homophobism won't stop now, either.
The point here isn't really raising money or changing people's minds or even raising awareness. The point is to make this as visible as possible, because it is a demonstration of support for anyone who may need it.
Last year I, a Parkwood High School junior, kickstarted a campaign to bring this GLSEN-sponsored but student-based initiative to Parkwood. It was far more successful than I had ever anticipated, with 200 participants and features in three newspapers. Now I want to make it bigger - with more participants, a better experience for participants, greater visibility, heightened fundraising and educational capacity, and an all-around more streamlined event.
What It Is
The Day of Silence is a GLSEN-sponsored but student-based initiative where students take a vow of silence for the day to show the silencing impact bullying and harassment can have on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students or students perceived to be a member of the LGBT community. There are two groups of participants: silent, who take the full vow of silence, and vocal, who are supportive of the cause but are unable to take the vow. The former will be given palm cards explaining their silence and a button to identify them. The latter are given buttons in order to demonstrate their support.
This year, it will take place on April 17th.
Where the Money Goes
- Buttons which will be used to identify participants
- Palm cards which will explain silence
- Dry erase boards to better streamline the experience for participants
- "Ally" wristbands which will be sold as fundraisers for the GLSEN
- Graphic flyers which will be posted in every teachers classroom
- Informational flyers which will be posted alongside the larger ones
- GLSEN official, full-color, 2-foot posters (one for every school building)
