Leah Schultz hasn't added a story.
As many of you know, in the Fall of 2013 Robert "Monk" Mackey was diagnosed with a carcinoid tumor. Since his diagnosis, he's been undergoing treatment and recently had his first surgery. He's currently recovering from the operation and will be exploring additional treatment as necessary.
Monk's friends, family and fellow musicians invite you to celebrate a benefit for him. All donations will go directly to Monk to cover medical bills and assist him financially during his recovery and treatment time.
Next, a brief and pseudo-accurate bio, as told by his daughter, Leah Mackey Schultz. For this, please excuse any slight historical inaccuracies (I did my best)...
Robert "Monk" Mackey, Louisville, KY native and longtime Louisville blues legend has been playing bass since age 14. His career began in high school with his first band, The Mosquito Fleet. Next, he and close friend Dennis Morton, joined forces in The Blue Ruin. Around 1974 he played with Texas Red and The Heartbreakers. His next adventure took him to Red Beans & Rice with pals Chet Bell, Martha O'Dell Bell, Nick Sundberg, Barry Stevens and Kim Ritchey. Together with Stevens, Sundberg, Ritchey, and the addition of Michael Murphy, Monk formed Another Mule. After a brief stint with da Mudcats Monk joined Steve Ferguson, first with The Humanitarians and then with The Midwest Creole Ensemble featuring guitarist Pat Lentz, keyboardist Keith Hubbard, and drummer Max Maxwell.
In 2004 Monk gathered several of Louisville's most respected blues musicians to form Monk & The Magnetos releasing his first solo album, Presence. The album contained all original pieces written and produced by Monk. The band included John Burgard (guitar), Steve Ferguson (guitar), Bill Dean (keyboards), Woody German (drums/percussion/vox) as well as guest appearances by Pat Lentz (guitar), Chet Bell (harp), Martha O'Dell Bell (vox), and his daughter Leah (vox/percussion). The album was recorded at Al Fresco's Place and engineered by Jeff Carpenter.
In 2010 Monk joined Little T&A with fellow bandmates Tony Tkac, Amy Schweitzer Johnson, Jeff McAllister, Doug Lamb and Mark Hoekstra. Today Monk resides in Louisville where he can be found writing music, performing with Little T&A, spending time with his family, and cheering on the Louisville Cardinals and Oakland Raiders
