Lelya is the Bulgarian word often used to refer to caregivers who are employed to take care of children. It is similar to the term "nanny" in English. Lelyas help to feed, change, hug on, stretch, play with, and oversee the physical and emotional needs of children in orphanages. The orphanage in Pleven currently has over 90 children who could benefit from spending time with a Lelya. Lelyas are generally paired with one or more children and they specifically meet the needs of those children. This allows them to focus on the needs of few rather than the overwhelming needs of the many.

As you can imagine, there are MANY needs that a Lelya can help meet, and MANY children that would benefit from having a Lelya! The goal of the Pleven Project is to fund the salaries of a minimum of 10 Lelyas to work in the orphanage in Pleven. The salary is a monthly wage per Lelya of the approximate equivalent of $132. This salary includes their health insurance fee and social security (if the Lelya is not of retirement age). The total amount needed to fund one Lelya's salary for one year is the equivilant of $1,586. The orphanage has requested a MINIMUM of 10 Lelyas, for a total financial need of $1,322 a month. $15,855 is needed to fully fund 10 Lelyas for one year. If the initial goal is met, there is the option of hiring MORE Lelyas so that more children in the orphanage can benefit from the 1:1 care.
