There is a family that's been on my heart for a while now. Diabetes has attacked the father and taken a serious toll on every member of the family.

Imagine spending countless days and nights at the hospital, while also doing your best to raise your daughter, hold your family together and juggle your teaching career along with bills, chores, meals and all the other "normal" stuff. When you're living like this, things can start falling through the cracks pretty quickly. Home repairs, vehicle maintenance, and other non-essentials tend to fall by the wayside because your family is basically in survival mode just trying to get from one day to the next.

If a scenario like this goes on for five or six months, it can quickly unravel any family. What if it goes on for five or six years?

When I met Mike, Shona and their daughter, Mike had already been battling diabetes for a number of years but he never let it get him down. Always going above and beyond for his family and others, he held down two jobs. He was a special needs school teacher here in Lee County during the day, and after work he delivered furniture. As the diabetes progressed, the condition took his leg, his eye and threatened to take his life on more than one occasion. Still, he always made a remarkable comeback, learning to deal with whatever struggles came his way.

The last couple of years have been exceptionally difficult. Mike has been in the hospital repeatedly and has been unable to provide that second income the family has needed. Medical bills, prescriptions and treatment have sapped their savings, bringing them to the point they are at right now.

It's hard to prioritize your finances when you have one income, medicine to purchase, and the house starts falling apart.

Shona first told me of their leaky roof over six months ago. They still haven't been able to get it fixed. The money just hasn't been there. Last month the washing machine died and the tires on their vehicle are almost bald.

How does this happen? A little at a time. You just keep putting things off because there's too many emergencies to deal with. Every time you get a little breather, something else happens...and this is where they are right now. They're at that point of feeling completely overwhelmed. I remember what that's like. I've been there myself.

As I was thinking about their situation, I knew I had to help.

I am praying and believing for Mike's complete healing, but I knew there were other, more tangible things I could do as well. A leaky roof, a few tires, and a washing machine may be overwhelming to one family facing financial trials, but they are very small things when we all pull together.

That's where you come in.

I am going to personally give toward providing these things for Mike, Shona, and their daughter, but I can't do it alone. Last night I started thinking about all my Facebook and Twitter friends, and I wondered how much we could help them if we all shared the burden I started this fundraiser.

Won't you help this beautiful family get back on track by donating today? I will continue to share this until we raise the full amount of money for their roof, washing machine and tires and I'm believing that all of you will help.

We will take pictures (and video) of the repairs and purchases and post this on Facebook so you can be a part of this wonderful experience!

Please give today, right now! Whether it's $5 or $150, let's start the holiday season off by giving. Isn't that what it's really all about?

Let's make sure these school teachers who have affected so many lives, encouraged so many children and been positive role models in our community don't fall through the cracks.

Thank you so much! If you have any questions just post them on my Facebook or please feel free to give me a call at 239-440-6856

Thank you so much! I know we can do this together!
