I am sure you have heard of the recent damage caused to the resilient people of Oklahoma. Most recent was a 1.3 mile wide EF-5 tornado that hit the Moore, OK area killing 23 people and injuring 377+. Measuring upwards to 210 mph and staying on the ground for an unprecedented 39 minutes it did a tremendous amount of damage destroying 1,150 homes and 2 billion dollars worth of damage. Probably the most disconcerting was that 2 elementary schools were completely demolished while young schoolchildren were huddled in bathrooms and hallways killing 7. One thing these schools as well as the majority of the 1,150 homes destroyed in this most recent storm was the lack of storm shelters and/or basements. Due to a very high water table and extremely hard clay native to this area many homes aren't built with these necessities i.e. basements and storm shelters.
Tornadoes aren't anything new for the state. Oklahoma averages an astounding 55 tornadoes a year. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/oun/?n=tornadodata-ok-monthlyannual As a matter of fact, Popular Mechanics has named I-44 Corridor (Highway connecting Oklahoma City and Tulsa) the 7th most dangerous places to live on the planet due to these tornadoes. http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/environment/natural-disasters/4329314#slide-7 You may ask yourself, "if there are so many tornadoes why isn't there a shelter or basement in every home?" Well, like mentioned before basements are all but nonexistent due to the hard clay and high water table but the other reason is just like everyone else right now, very few people have the disposable $2,500 to $6,500 for a shelter.
People with the disposable income are keeping shelter companies in Central Oklahoma (OKC, Moore area) extremely busy. Some booked 6+ months in advance. While this is great for those with the available funds, those living on the other side of the I-44 corridor, Tulsa, and those without the available funds are being left in the dark. This is where we want to help. We want to install affordable shelters in the Tulsa area and cater to those that may not be able to afford a shelter through the other shelter companies. We have a manufacturer that wants to help. They have offered to manufacture tested and approved shelters for us at a discounted price. This will be a family business. We will run a two person crew, my father and myself working out of our homes with no overhead costs. We are currently working with a bank to guarantee financing. Our goal is to give people with lower incomes a way to protect themselves and their family during times of need. I want to thank you for taking the time to read our page and hope that you will share this dream with us. Thank you so much!
