Myself, along with about a dozen other volunteers are leaving for Bulgaria on July 17 to help rehabilitate an orphanage. All of the volunteers are paying his and her own ways to Bulgaria. We are raising money to plaster the walls which we will then paint. These are communist-era buildings that are in dire need of rehabilitation in order to serve the 90 orphans that are housed there. About 25 have mental or physical challenges. We are volunteering through Tabitha Foundation Bulgaria:

The orphanage is in Vratza, Bulgaria. Its name is "Assen Ziatarov", or 'Social Home'.

About Me:
I have a doctorate in cultural/medical anthropology teach at several universities in the US. I've also volunteered internationally for many years, working with small NGOs. I'm interested in the social, economic and political aspects of inequality, particularly in regards to gender, health and education.

For 20 years I've managed volunteer surgeons and operating room personnel on short-term international missions and taken people humanitarian trips to Asia, South America and Africa. In 2008, I founded Humanitarian Travel Abroad, LLC, making trips available to non-student and non-medical volunteers.
