On 16 September 2012, my brother Col's life and that of his family changed forever. Cycling was and still is his passion. This particular day, he and his mates were out for their usual Sunday ride choosing to do the Mt Nebo loop (just out of Brisbane). After a cup of coffee and a chat at the top of the mountain they set on our way. On the descent, he had a serious crash and nearly lost his life. He was unable to negotiate a sharp turn and crashed into a guard rail became airborne and smashed into trees. He suffered a spinal cord injury and is now a paraplegic.

Col has a wife, Jenny as well as 2 boys, Jack (15) and Max (13). Their older boy, Jack is autistic and attends a special school in Brisbane and it is likely that Jack will remain at home as an adult requiring some level of assistance. Up to now, they have had their hands full trying managing Jack and trying to ensure that he has had the help and interventions to enable him to develop and progress as much as possible.

Over the course of the next few months, friends and family will be organising fundraising events to raise funds to assist with Col's rehabilitation and his recovery. At this stage, he is still in the Spinal Unit at the PA Hospital in Brisbane. He was due out on 7 March 2013, however, he has been unable to progress far enough in his rehabilitation due to pressure sores and infections so this has now been pushed out to mid April 2013.

He is struggling both mentally and physically with the challenges that he now faces as a paraplegic, however, he has his mind set that he will walk again and get on his bike and ride.

The purpose of the fundraising is to raise money for:

1) Attendance at the Walk on Program run through Spinal Cord Injuries Association at Sporting Wheelies Gym in Brisbane - this will cost approximately $15,000
2) Purchase of a motor vehicle that can be modified so he can drive and have some independence - they currently own a manual car and this cannot be converted - this will cost approximately $15,000 - $20,000
3) Purchase of a Hand Cycle for exercise - this will cost approximately $3,000-$4,000
4) Purchase of a FES RT-300 bike - this will cost approximately $20,000
