In the contemporary educational context of Latin America, the safety and physical integrity of students have become critical priorities. In a region marked by socioeconomic inequalities and complex public safety challenges, the peace of mind of families—who delegate the custody of their children during the school day—depends on the institutional capacity to guarantee secure environments.
This concern is heightened in peri-urban sectors and communities with limited infrastructure, where the commute between school and home represents a period of high vulnerability. Whether the journey is made on foot, via informal public transport, or school routes, there is a "supervision gap" that generates high levels of anxiety and uncertainty in Latin American households.
The Project: A Local Solution for a Global Challenge
This project stems from a critical need shared by multiple communities across the region: the implementation of a reliable, efficient, and low-cost personal geolocation system. The goal is to monitor the real-time location of primary school students, especially in areas where topography or urban planning hinders traditional surveillance.
The proposal focuses on a portable device and a receiving station (Gateway) that operate autonomously. Unlike expensive commercial solutions, this system is designed to be robust even in areas with intermittent conventional cellular network coverage, a common reality in various settlements throughout the region.
Technological Architecture and Feasibility
To address this challenge within the Latin American environment, it is imperative to use technologies that balance precision with economic accessibility:

GPS (Global Positioning System): This constitutes the backbone of the tracking system. The NEO-6M GPS module was selected for its ideal balance between precision and cost, allowing for geographic coordinates to be obtained without depending on local terrestrial infrastructure.

Internet of Things (IoT): This enables the student's device to interact with the receiving station without human intervention, creating a real-time information ecosystem that is vital for emergency management and transport route optimization.

LoRa (Long Range) Technology: This is the key to regional adaptability. Wi-Fi (due to limited range) and GSM/GPRS (due to high subscription costs and carrier "dead zones") were ruled out. LoRa allows for long-range communication ($2$ to $5$ km in dense urban environments) with minimal power consumption. By creating an independent private network, monthly operating costs are eliminated, making the project sustainable for low-income communities.
Prototype Specifications
The Transmitter (Student):
Based on the ESP32-S3 microcontroller, chosen for its power and energy efficiency. Its functions include:

The Receiver (Parents or Institution):
Built on an ESP8266 module, this receiver constantly listens for LoRa transmissions. Upon receiving the signal, it decodes the data and allows the exact location to be viewed through open-source applications (such as ESP32 ARDUINO GPS MAP), facilitating an immediate response to any contingency during the school commute.
