Mindy Dick hasn't added a story.
My name is MIndy my son his name is William he was born in 1996. He was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia.
Biliary atresia is a life-threatening condition in infants in which the bile ducts inside or outside the liver do not have normal openings.Bile ducts in the liver, also called hepatic ducts, are tubes that carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder for storage and to the small intestine for use in digestion. Bile is a fluid made by the liver that serves two main functions: carrying toxins and waste products out of the body and helping the body digest fats and absorb the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. With biliary atresia, bile becomes trapped, builds up, and damages the liver. The damage leads to scarring, loss of liver tissue, and cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is a chronic, or long lasting, liver condition caused by scar tissue and cell damage that makes it hard for the liver to remove toxins from the blood. These toxins build up in the blood and the liver slowly deteriorates and malfunctions. Without treatment, the liver eventually fails and the infant needs a liver transplant to stay alive.Biliary Atresia Infants often have nutritional deffencies and require special diets as they grow up.
William was only 8 months old when he had his liver transplant the operation took over 14 hours.I has my son when I was 16 yrs old and a single mother going through all this was really sad and just about couldnt handle it. But we are here today telling baby Williams Story.
When my son was born the doctors said he was healthy and they sent me home like 2 months later he started to get really sick and haveing nauseua was so scary for me to see him go through this. He would cry lots. I took him to the hospital and they sent him home and put him on vitamins and that didnt help brought him back to the hospital within a few days they sent us to the Children's Hospital in Vancouver. That's where they diagnosed him then from there they sent us to Edmonton Children's Hospital. We were there until he was about a year and a couple months. when he did get checked out and I signed the paper to release him from the hospital I looked down at him and he was turning blue. I then ran to Emergeny and they werent going to take him right away then I ran back to the floor he was on and the nurse gave us a room right away cause she knew us for a long time right away she said lay him on his side so I did right when I did that he started having seizures right in front of me. Then it seemed like we were never going to leave that hospital . Then we were back to the start with him again. Then like a couple more months later they released him and I had to look after all his wounds and clean all 37 staples. Then they started letting him have day passes and the bile we had to measure all that it came out of a tube. I never thought that would happen to us. It was so heartbreaking to see my son lying there with all those machines hooked up to him .
Now my son is 19 yrs old abd moved out on his own He was in the Hospital rejecting his liver in May 2015. He is on antirejecting ,medicine they did take him off his blood pressure medicine. He still needs to get blood work done every 2 weeks and has to see the doctors in Vancouver every two months.
Your donations will be spent on helping WIlliam for his living expenses (Hydro, Telus) Travel Expenses and Grocery Expense. I also would like him to have his own reliable car to get him back and forth to appointments which are like 5 hours away. He has to get blood work done every two weeks. I just want him to live a happy life and stress free. I love him and I hope you will find it in your hearts to help my son by donating $5,$10, $20 or any amount that you wish. Thank you so much greatly appreciated!!!!
