Natalie McParlin hasn't added a story.
The Home was established in 2005 by a local fellowship group of 20 people, who would feed local families in need, and visit children in the street once a week. They quickly recognised the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and provide an alternative future for the younger generations.
Determined to provide a sustainable education and sanctuary for basic needs for the children of Kawangware (near Nairobi, Kenya), local couple Jacinta and Joseph carried on with the project and continued to develop St Dorcas Children's Home.
Jacinta's vision is to;
"Bring up the less fortunate in my area to a level of acceptance among the community, to make them realise their potential and break the cycle of poverty."
The Home started with 15 children but has risen to over 70 children since its creation. They range in age from 3-17 years old. The children who live at the Home are mostly rescued street children, some orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, or abandoned children as a result of broken marriages, or discriminated against (especially girls) and deprived of (among other things) an education.
Despite having very limited funding (what little they do have is donated by the community and international volunteers), the Home has managed to sustain an education programme (primary and secondary school) for most of the live-in children and others who walk there each day from their homes
