April Hallwood hasn't added a story.
No parent should ever watch their child flatline in the emergency room on a cold steel table. I remember staring at the monitor, watching her heart rate go from an unbelievably high rate of 220 beats per minute, down to zero. The physician told us she would 'feel funny.' I held my daughter's hand and kept telling her I was there, that it would be all right. She took a deep breath, and then there was nothing. Two tears rolled down her cheeks. She was so still. Frighteningly still. After a few seconds, but what seemed like an eternity, she took another gasp, her heart rate slowly increased, and she burst into tears. My daughter had an adverse reaction and suffered angina during medical cardioversion, with an inability to move her body. It was an awful thing to experience for both of us, and I don't know that we will ever shake it, but we were told she was lucky to be here.
My daughter was diagnosed with sinus nodal reentrant tachycardia. In essence, she was born with an accessory electrical pathway, which was wreaking havoc on her heart and its rhythm. Even with two medical cardioversions, she could not sustain normal sinus rhythm. She was given a medication to slow her heart rate down considerably until she could have a cardiac ablation, a procedure where cautery would be performed in order to eliminate this accessory pathway and the rhythm disturbance. It was scheduled immediately and, while It was thought to be successful, two years later, the arrhythmia has returned.
About six weeks ago, my daughter started having the same symptoms as before. Shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, her heart pounding through her chest. A cardiology consultation was scheduled, which she had yesterday, and it has been determined that another procedure will be required to eliminate this rhythm disturbance. It is difficult enough for my daughter to undergo another procedure, reliving the events from two years ago, the anxiety and fear that accompany this, but we have just learned that she is no longer insured under her prior policy. We only found this out when we went to an urgent care clinic, and she was turned away. While we are researching this, as well as other options, our main goal is to get immediate help with my daughter's cardiology expenses. This is where we need your help.
The consult yesterday, with blood work and a 30-day event monitor will run about $1700. A second cardiac ablation will be in excess of $60,000. Again, we are working diligently to find a new insurance plan, possibly getting charity help from the hospital, as well as a couple of private organizations, but nothing is set in stone yet. These are all expenses we could not have anticipated, as we thought my daughter was covered. She has only just turned 21, and is far too young to be saddled with this debt and dealing with these issues.
I will be working on a YouCaring.com medical fundraiser for my daughter for the greater/future medical expenses, but am seeking help with immediate medical expenses with FundRazr.com.
All parents believe that their children are special. I am no different. My daughter is a beautiful spirit, inside and out. She has the goal of becoming a veterinarian and is in school presently for pre-veterinary studies. She is so incredibly intelligent. She is compassionate and cares deeply for her friends and values relationships. She also works full time and is a very driven young woman. Her future is so bright, and I want her to experience everything this life has to offer. She grabs life by both hands. I want her to live this life fully, and she can't do that without a healthy heart rhythm. Your consideration in helping my daughter is not only appreciated, I am grateful for it. I am truly grateful. Thank you.
