Suzanne Volner hasn't added a story.
A little over two years ago my husband found this sweet little Caridigan Welsh Corgi mix wandering outside our local supermarket. It was extremely hot here in Florida and she ran up to Mark and he picked her up and brought her inside Publix and asked at customer service if anybody had lost a dog. He left his name and number and took her home with him. We looked for months to see if anyone had posted fliers as well as took her to the vet to see if she was micro-chipped which she wasn't. Well, we fell in love with her and took her back to the vet to see if she'd been spayed and after looking for a surgical scar they didn't think so. When we went to get her spayed they do a heart worm test first and her results came back positive! After three months of painful shots and about 1000.00 Kita was cured and we took her in too have her spayed and when they opened her up they saw she had no uterus. I was shocked......this poor baby went through a surgery and had already been spayed and also we still had to pay for the entire cost as if it were a spay.
Kita has been having what we thought were seizures since September. Last Wednesday we had the money saved to take her to the vet. I thought she'd be put on Phenobarbital and would be okay. That didn't happen.
Kita's extremely anemic and had to spend almost two days in the hospital. After blood tests and urynalisis it was determined she has non-regenerative anemial. Her bone marrow's not producing red blood cells. She was put on Prednisone six days ago and had a PCV test this morning and her red blood cell count was 14% when a normal count is between 37% and 55%. Anything lower than 10% requires a blood transfusion.
Kita's vet recommended we try the medication Cyclosporine which is 200.00. I feel terrible that cost is such an issue. We spent 415.96 plus the cost of the PCV test today and medications. We also have a German Shepherd/Chow Chow cross who just the day before Kita's diagnosis was diagnosed herself with degenerative disc disease and cost 259.06. I feel so bad that we can't afford the money now to try this other medication for Kita. We have the two dogs and my husband is home all the time after having brain surgery in 2006 and they are his world and spends so much time walking them and taking care of them. It's heartbreaking to see him sad about worrying about his dog and I know he wishes he could go out and work and make more money for her care. If you made it this far reading about Kita, thank you.
Kita's been through so much and she's not an old dog according to her vet. with trying this medication. I hate the fact that just 200.00 could mean the difference between curing her and having her put to sleep. I think there's hope for her but am so afraid her red blood cell count will go so low that she requires a blood transfusion which is about 400.00.
I have trouble asking people for help but when it comes to maybe saving the life of my pet who's a member of our family my pride's not important at all. Thank you to anyone who may be able to help Kita.
