Brittany Vine hasn't added a story.
Angelina was born with a cleft lip, and likely a cleft palate. She has not yet received any medical attention for her condition. Cleft care is not covered by National Health Insurance and Angelina’s family cannot afford the trip to the nearby city where cleft care is available, nor can they afford the medical costs associated with her condition.
Cleft lip and cleft palates are best treated between 0 and 18 months of age, but Angelina can achieve positive results if medical care is given soon. A cleft lip/palate has the potential to cause significant challenges for Angelina’s future physical and social development. In Ghana, a country that marginalizes persons with disabilities, this would undoubtedly affect her educational opportunities, future employment, and may even threaten her life.
We have arranged for Angelina and her mother to travel to Kumasi’s Cleft Palate clinic on June 12th. While there we hope to make arrangements for her to receive the surgery & medical care that she needs.
Angelina’s trip to Kumasi will be the first of several stages of necessary care. We anticipate she will need to make a return trip to Kumasi and spend at least 1 week there for surgery and recovery (Stage 2), and that she may require a second surgery or follow-up visits (Stages 3+). Because Angelina has not yet been appropriately assessed the extent of her medical needs are unknown. Additionally, her National Health Insurance will likely not cover the surgeries she needs and the costs of these surgeries will be prohibitive to her care without outside assistance. Any funds raised in excess of the funds needed for Stage 1 of care will be held, and applied to the funds required for her Stages 2 & 3+ care.
Thank you for caring for Angelina in such a tangible way. We look forward to keeping you updated on her condition and how your funds have been able to provide for her future.
