Nikki Durkee hasn't added a story.
That's her name, although we call her Grace, we have known this little 3 year old TB filly her whole life. Her dams breeding was done with great care and excitement. With the bloodlines of Stage door Johnny, Seattle Slew, Secretariat, Northern Dancer, Mr Prospector and Bold Ruler, she was sure to be a hopeful for the biggest races.
Grace was born at a good friends racehorse farm very close to us, she was raised and cared for by our very own Gina Crawford, owner of Rockin' Horse Haulers.
When she was just a year old Grace had a life threatening virus and very nearly died. Gina cared for her while she lay sick for days. She had fluids pumped into her and it was 50-50 if she made it.
This amazing little girl fought and fought and pulled through. The love and sweetness in this filly is amazing. Then the following year She suffered a bad colic in the field, her owner and Nikki rushed over after a neighbor called and again, she recovered.
These setbacks took a toll on her, she got to 3 years old and should have been already training to make her the horse she was destined to be, but she hadn't grown. She looks like a scrawny pony, barely 15hh, not the big strapping horse she should be.
Her owner had to think logically, despite the high hopes he had since the day she was conceived, and made the decision to pass her on the Second Chance team and let them train her and find her a home.
So on the 20th March 2013, Grace came to us. Having never been on a trailer but being the sweetheart she is she followed Gina right up and made the very short journey to her new home.
We let Grace get accustomed to her new home for a couple of days and then she came in to have her feet done, be wormed and have her coggins pulled. Over the next few days Grace leaned how to tie, bath, be tacked up and started learning voice commands in the round pen.
Mostly due to her wonderful nature, Grace proved a bright and willing student and enjoyed her work sessions each day.
We let Gina know how well she doing and she passed it along to her old owner. He was thrilled she was doing well but had not quite gotten over the feeling that she had something about her. She had heart.
A few days later, he made us a proposition. He offered us that if we did the first three months, got her broke and fit, he would pay to take her racing and we would be the owners.
It took all of about 2 minutes to decide yes!!
And so our adventure with Grace begins....
