My name is Ottoa, and I am a mother of two boys living in rural Jamaica.
During Hurricane Melissa, our family suffered major property damage, and that experience shook us to the core. It opened our eyes to how unsafe our current living structure is and how urgently we need a secure, hurricane-resistant building to protect our children.

🌪️ What Hurricane Melissa Revealed

The place we live in is made from:

• Ply

• 2x4 boards

• Zinc sheets

• A bare concrete floor

This is not a hurricane-safe structure.
When Melissa hit, the wind rattled the building so badly that we had to flee and shelter in someone else’s home. We could not stay in our own house because it is simply not strong enough to withstand even a moderate storm.

Every hurricane season, we are forced to run to someone else for safety. We love our home, but it is not a safe place for our children when storms come.

🧱 Why We Are Asking for Help

After seeing the damage from Melissa, we realized we cannot go through another season living like this.
We desperately want to build one small, sturdy, concrete bedroom where:

• My two boys and I can shelter safely during a storm

• We can stay home instead of running to others for refuge

• We don’t have to keep rebuilding and patching up after every hurricane

We already have some blocks, but we still need:

• 500 more blocks

• Sand

• Stone

• Cement

• Steel

• Zinc for roofing

• Labour assistance

Just one hurricane-resistant room would change everything for our family.

🐓🐝 Help Needed for Our Livestock (Poultry & Bees)

In addition to our home, we also depend on livestock for part of our income and daily living.

1. Our Poultry Coop Is Destroyed

The coop is in terrible shape:

• The zinc blew off and is badly deteriorated

• The flooring is not hygienic

• Rainwater pours in from every direction

• The structure was built with temporary tree lumber, which has rotted

We need help to rebuild a proper, clean, concrete-floor poultry coop with:

• Good quality zinc roofing

• Proper framing

• Sawdust bedding

• Security from rain and predators

This would protect our birds and restore part of our livelihood.

2. Our Bee Boxes Need Urgent Replacement

I am also a beekeeper.
Over the years, many of our bee boxes have deteriorated, and several hives have no proper homes.

I have the skill and the necessary tools — including a table saw — to build the boxes myself. The only thing I lack is:

• Lumber to build the boxes

Without new boxes, we risk losing bees, losing honey production, and losing our investment. All I need is the material. I can do the labour.
