Justice for Indigenous Teen at Guildford Mall: Help Us Fight Racial Profiling
On November 12, 2024, a deeply troubling incident unfolded at Guildford Mall in Surrey, BC, involving my 16-year-old stepdaughter, who is of Cree First Nations descent. She was wrongfully accused of theft, forcibly detained, and aggressively restrained by multiple security guards—all while with two friends, who were not targeted or detained. Despite showing her belongings and proving her innocence, she was publicly held down in an excessive show of force that has left her traumatized.
This incident reflects a much larger issue of racial profiling and discrimination that Indigenous people continue to face across Canada.
Our family is determined to seek justice—not only for our daughter but for all Indigenous youth who deserve safety and respect in public spaces. We believe that this fight has implications for the broader Indigenous community, and we’re asking for your support to make accountability possible.
What We’re Fighting For:
- Criminal Accountability: We are pursuing charges of assault, forcible confinement, public mischief, and criminal harassment against the security guards involved in this incident.
- Civil Justice: We are filing a civil lawsuit for false imprisonment, defamation, and emotional distress, seeking damages to cover the psychological harm caused by this traumatic experience.
- Human Rights Action: We are filing a complaint with the BC Human Rights Tribunal to address the racial profiling and discriminatory treatment she experienced. Indigenous people should not have to fear harassment and profiling in public spaces.
Why Your Support Matters:
Legal battles of this scale require significant resources, from legal fees to investigative costs. This campaign is about more than just one incident: it’s a stand against racial profiling and injustice faced by Indigenous communities. With your support, we can send a powerful message that these actions are unacceptable and that Indigenous rights must be protected.
How You Can Help:
Your contribution will help cover:
- Legal representation and court fees
- Investigative costs and expert consultations
- Resources to bring this case to light and build a precedent for future protections
Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to achieving justice. By supporting this campaign, you’re not only helping one family but standing up for Indigenous youth across Canada. Together, we can create change and hold those responsible accountable.
