I grew up in a family of 5, Mother, Father, younger brother and sister. My Mother grew up in a Native American environment, attending parochial schools until she graduated High School. Our heritage was considered a liability, the family did not talk about our lineage as Native Americans. Later on this would come back to haunt us in our bid to receive Federal Recognition. Our treaty with the U.S. Government included a great deal of land in which Portland is located. We were denied federal recognition in 1987.
Native Americans have a very high susceptibility to alcoholism and drug addiction. The rate for our race is 95 out of a hundred, the very highest percentage of all races. My immediate family was a 100%, I am the only survivor.
Our world may have intermingled enough to bring about a genetic disposition, perhaps that or addiction has multiple origins. We know one fact, the planet is on a collision course of epidemic levels of all addictions. In spite of everything we throw at addiction it continues to thrive.
This has not always been the case. We came up with a program in 1935 that did the impossible. Chronic Alcoholics were able to find long term recovery. We went from 2 to hundreds, thousands then millions. Unfortunately we encountered a change that has limited the effectiveness of this program. Perhaps we made it so complicated, success became limited.
Now, today, we must access methods that stem the tide of addiction. The growth of this epidemic may reach exponential proportion. We are offering a new method to an old recipe. We know the brain forms Neuro pathways from repeated use of any drug. We will engage therapies that help alter the pathways. One method is creativity, Art will help the brain create new pathways that provide relief from the addictive pathways. This will take time, effort change. We know that addiction responds to change over a consistent period of time. We know that certain therapies may help the process. We believe that holistic manipulation is the safest form of treatment for addiction.
Art&Recovery will provide these therapies, combined with nutrition, exercise, and patience, we will provide a complete environment for good health. We understand detoxification may require medical intervention. We also believe the need for evaluating chemical imbalance, mental health, physical health over a period of time. We recognize that every individual is unique, every addiction within an individual is unique, this requires individual attention. The individual, the group, our creative process, our proven therapies will provide solutions for humane treatment of addiction.
