Brenda is a gorgeous mini shepherd type girl who wins the hearts of absolutely everyone. She has been with us since January and settled in lovely at kennels. However following a seizure she has been diagnosed with having a portosytsemic liver shunt. This condition is a blood vessel anomaly which results in blood from the abdominal organs being diverted to the heart and bypassing the liver. This means that toxins aren’t being eliminated and accumulate in her body in dangerous quantities. There are two ways to tackle the condition, one is with medication for life and the other is surgery. The medication route is essentially a management plan which doesn't cure the problem and whilst the quality of life is improved, the dog's life will ultimately be shortened, and the quality compromised. The second option is to fix the shunt surgically. This does cure the problem 100% if successful but carries a minor risk. The figures quoted by the soft tissue surgical team is in the region of 2% to 5% risk.

We have onboard one of the top European specialist of liver shunt surgery, Rob White from The Willows Referral clinic as her surgeon and as a team with the consultation of the Willows expert, we have decided that this was Brenda’s best chance at having a good quality of life.

We feel that as Brenda will be rehomed after her surgery, her new family would not have the worry about her health or the cost of ongoing medication and of course her life span will be extended dramatically. Please support her in this by donating towards the costs of her surgery. Many many thanks as always!
