Meet Brandon Covington. He is my nephew-in-law. He is a very special young man who is severely autistic and is the victim of neglect and abuse at the hands of the people who were supposed to be his caregivers. He is 22 years old, but as a result of his autism, he is only at the mental level of a seven year old. He is unable to care for himself so he depends on the aid of other able and responsible adults to help care for his everyday needs.
In February of 2014, his caregivers dropped him off with his Aunt and Uncle, apparently with the intent of seeking help to nurse him back to health. His Aunt and Uncle immediately discovered the severity of his situation and took him to the hospital. After establishing the severity of Brandon's condition and situation, another family member contacted the authorities.
Brandon stands at about 5’1” tall and, at the hospital, he only weighed in at about 52lbs. It was discovered that he was being literally starved to death by the people who were supposed to be his caregivers. The hospital determined that within another week he would have been dead if this life threatening situation had not been discovered. His Aunt and Uncle saved his live by taking him in, discovering the severity of his situation and getting him to the hospital. Brandon is now in the legal custody and guardianship of his loving aunt and Uncle and, with their help, is in the process of regaining a healthy weight.
Charges have been filed and legal proceedings are now underway to bring to justice the people responsible for Brandon’s neglect and abuse. In spite of their own financial straits’, his aunt and uncle have stepped up to the plate to help care for and protect him. Unfortunately, they are being buried alive under a major financial burden as attorney’s fees and other legal expenses for Brandon are piling up. Therefore, Brandon is in dire need of help to pay his legal expenses and relieve his Aunt and Uncle from the weight of this major financial burden so they can continue to care for their own two small children, one of whom is also autistic.
Under the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) special people like Brandon have rights too, and have the right to feel safe and secure in the hands of those who are supposed to be their care givers.
This fundraiser has been set up to help Brandon raise the money that he so desperately needs to help pay his legal expenses and help relieve his aunt and uncle from such a major financial burden. Please show Brandon that you care about special people like him, by helping him raise the money he needs to pay his legal expenses. Thank you.
