“When we decide to make a change, it’s because we are hoping that it will be for improving our situations, our purpose, and our lives.”
In 2005, eight athletes created a race to capture the essence of change. This race is known today as the Spartan Race™, which is held worldwide and is now seen as the ultimate obstacle race to, “test your resilience, strength, stamina, quick decision making skills, and ability to laugh in the face of adversity.” As an individual who identifies with my Native Pueblo roots, everyday is a challenge filled with adversity. My name is Nathaniel Fuentes, this is my journey to triumph and success over adversity.
Adversity found me in 2011, after being diagnosed with an incurable disease known as Degenerative Disc Disease, a disease that deteriorates the cartilage between the bones and leaves those who suffer from it in discomfort or pain. Because of the disease’s accelerated progress, it had left me paralyzed for 3 months. With the inability to move from my bed, from my house, to walk, run, jump, and even hold the ones I love, freedom and independence would no longer be the same. Battling through depression, self-doubt, and the inability to move with freedom and independence, and combined with the realism that in the near future the use of one or both my legs could be gone, I decided and made a change.
This change would be to push myself to my limits and beyond, to enjoy the gifts that we all take for granted like the ability to walk, to jump, to run, to not cower from my pain but to use it to pick myself up, to rebuild from the ground up who I am, and no matter what the outcome I will continue to integrate the Spartan Code into my life:
- To push my mind and body to their limits.
- To master my emotions.
- To learn continuously.
- To give generously.
- To lead.
- To stand up for what I believe in, no matter the cost.
- To know my flaws as well as I know my strengths.
- To prove myself through actions, not words.
- To live everyday as if it were my last.
To date I have been training since October 2013 to complete my first Spartan Race on May 3rd - 4th 2014, as a testament of overcoming adversity, defining who and what I am while realigning myself with a more positive future.
I’d like to ask for your assistance in this change, by making a donation of any size, in order to help make the Spartan Race a reality.

Nathaniel Fuentes
