Paula Wadleigh hasn't added a story.
We found Caleb along side a bike path in Rome GA on the 7th of February 2014. He was barely alive. I sent someone home to get a blanket and our Red Flyer wagon and we rolled him to the car at the end of the path (no motorized vehicles allowed). We took him to the vet, who had to have a name, so we decided on Caleb. The vet was not too encouraging about his ability to recover, but agreed he had a much better chance in our home. We already have two grown female white labs, so he has some canine company, and good examples for behavior.
We have been feeding him broth with corn starch, a suggetion from the vet. Never would have thought of the corn starch, but its an excellent idea. It gives the broth some substance and is a source of energy for him. We also soak dry dog food in the broth, and he's eating that too, now.
When we took him to the vet the first day, they tried to take his temperature, but it would not register, he was SO cold, and not producing any of his own heat. After a day or so in the house he is now able to produce some heat of his own. He has his own kiddy pool with a pad and blankets to help him stay warm. Also, there is nothing but skin covering bones, at this point, so the pad is very welcomed.
We are a retired couple on a limited income and to keep up with vet bills (the first day was $100) is an issue. Any help is so very much appreciated.
