This is a soulful plea for help to anyone who believe that parents should be able to care for their own children! Our daughter, Cadence, was essentially stolen from us 2 years ago, and now we need help to get her back!
6 years ago I met the love of my life on an online video game called World of Warcraft. When I found out I was pregnant with our first baby 3 years later, I thought that my prayers had been answered and I would finally have the family I had always dreamed of. But shortly after finding out the great news, our life took a turn for the worse.
My husband got laid off at his job, which didn't give us many options. We were forced to move into his parent's home. They promised to help get us on our feet and told us they would help with the baby. Everything seemed fine but the closer I got to delivery my in-laws started to change.
They began verbally abusing my husband and I and putting us down for living in their home, telling us we were never going to amount to anything. They said our baby would be better off in the care of their daughter and constantly demanded we give her custody, which we always refused. She herself also approached me every chance she got and pleaded that it would be the best decision given our current circumstances.
Not long after our daughter was born things got even worse. My in-laws basically took over the parenting role of our daughter, demanding that she sleep where THEY can watch her and hear her. Had we refused these demands, we would have been kicked out and left homeless. They also told us if we didn't give them custody of our daughter that all 3 of us would be homeless; we prolonged as much as possible, even going to court once, but because they didn't have our consent the judge threw them out of the courtroom!
Following this defeat, they began to get really angry and hateful towards us, and started putting our daughter in the middle. They pretended like they only wanted to help, and assured that if we signed over temporary custody we could get that overturned once we got financially stable; that they would willingly give her back once we were standing on our own. Reluctantly, my husband finally convinced me that this was the best thing for our daughter given our situation, and he promised me it wasn't permanent.
After signing over temporary primary custody my inlaws turned their back on us and served us an eviction notice. Not long after, my husband was offered a job in California. After a ton of thought and careful consideration, we made the most difficult decision of our lives, in the hopes that we would get our daughter back sooner. He accepted the position, we packed our things, said our goodbyes to friends and family, and most importantly Cadence, and left our daughter behind while we got our lives in order.
We have now been living out here for a year and a half and he has been working there that entire time. We have an established residency, a room for our daughter, and even insurance for the entire family. We have started the process to try and get custody back, but have yet to come to any resolution. While we can talk with our daughter at any time via Skype, the awkwardness of my in-laws being in the background monitoring the calls makes this difficult. We get minimal visitation, and each exchange require nearly 12 hours of driving and almost $200 in gas.
A year and a half and $15,000 later, we still have no positive news. I'm beginning to feel like we will never have our family back. My daughter just turned 4 and I'm also 5 months pregnant. We are looking for any sort of help; be it financial or emotional support. Please share our story to help fight for justice!
God Bless <3
