Friends & Family,

Every year my home church, Christ's Church of the Valley here in Phoenix, sends teams on short mission trips all around the world. As of this year I have changed my major to Social Work and I am working towards my BSW. I feel called to be a part of what they are doing for those in need and I want to be a part of the long-term change for their community. I’ve seen that these mission trips can also be life changing experiences for those who go.  This year, I’ve committed myself to participate in the trip to Nairobi, Kenya in July 2014 and am incredibly excited about what lies ahead for me.

Our team will be doing several projects in a specific slum called Korogocho. (See video above) CCV partners with Korogocho and Missions of Hope International to work there in order to see long-term transformation and community development.  There is a school with about 200 kids in the middle of the slum.  We will spend the week at that school doing activities with the kids such as soccer camps, visiting homes, doing health education, and constructing skylights. We’ll also have a team of doctors doing a medical clinic.

-There are four main teams that will have special tasks while in Kenya.

1.) Bring the Light - We will work alongside local social workers to construct sky-lights in homes to allow light into otherwise pitch black living rooms; this also involves evangelism, home visits, and medical education in the home.

2.) Sports - A team will lead hundreds of school children in a soccer clinic and tournament.

3.) Children - A team will work with the children of Korogocho schools doing lessons, crafts, and games.

4.) Medical and Dental - Doctors, Dentists, and Nurses will staff a clinic alongside the local ministry to serve the medical needs of the slum population.

I’m writing to ask for your support in three ways—financially, through yard sale donations, or through prayer. The total cost of my trip will be roughly $4,000 which includes my registration, vaccinations needed to travel, equipment needed in Kenya, passport and visa expenses, travel expenses, food, and lodging. This is NOT a fundraiser for my church, this is for my individual mission trip. I certainly plan on working myself but I will not be able to cover the entire cost.

If you are interested in donating items for the yard sale that will be taking place in the Spring, please e-mail me for furthur information:

"I give God permission to do anything He wishes to me, with me, in me or through me that would glorify Him."

This year my faith has been taken to a deeper level and I feel that the lord has cleared my mind to show me the path I need to take; helping those that are less fortunate.  I look forward to the many ways my life will be touched and changed. I know that this experience is going to teach me the true meaning of having to rely soley on god and his plan. Thank you for your continual prayer during my journey!

Love Always,

Heather Riley
