Pat's been battling vascular dementia and Alzheimer's Disease for nine years. All of you who know him know what an amazing person he is--creative, kind, funny and generous to a fault. He's literally saved the lives of several friends, mentored many young contractors and carpenters and beautified communities in California and New Mexico with his wonderful workmanship. Now, Pat needs your help.

Cut down by dementia in his mid-50's at the peak of his career, he's now nine years into the disease and needs skilled care. I met Pat 17 years ago and married him in 2001. He's been an incredible blessing in my life. If there were any way I could continue to care for him at home, I would. However, our resources are drained and I must return to work after a year of being his full-time caregiver. We hope to return to California, where his son and many of our friends and other family members are.

To place him in long-term care is a very hard decision and one I've approached with a lot of prayer. His doctors and our priest both advise it. The dilemma is funding. Caring for Pat these nine years has drained our finances. Optimal care for him would be an assisted living facility. These centers cost between $3,500 and $8,000 per month, slightly less than most nursing homes without MediCal.

I'm seeking $32,000 to pay for an assisted living placement for Pat for eight months. During that time, I intend to find a good job and save money so that I can continue providing for him. This support also would give me time to apply for MediCal for him so that he'll be eligible when he needs to move to a skilled nursing facility.

This is a chance for you to thank Pat for what he's meant to you, to honor a loved one you've lost to Alzheimer's or another dementia, or to pay it forward for a blessing you've received. Thank you beyond words for whatever you can provide.
