Eve Knepp hasn't added a story.
Emerson Verena was born on Friday, September 13 at 2:09 AM in Glenwood Springs, CO. It was a traumatic birth under emergency C-section. She aspirated meconium in utero and was born not breathing and having a very low heart rate. Within hours she was flown by helicopter from the western slope of Colorado to Denver. She was put on a cooling blanket for 3 days to minimize any potential brain damage from the lack of oxygen. Over the next 4.5 weeks in the NICU she fought off pulmonary hyper-tension, a brain bleed, and was found to have permanent hearing loss. She was given a cocktail of drugs to calm her sedated state. She was orally intubated and placed on an oscillator breathing machine (pumping 600 breaths a minute) and fed through an IV in her umbilical cord. These beginning weeks of her life were especially hard as she endured much trauma. Her parents noted that they “could tell from the very beginning, even under heavy sedation that her eyes were strong and her grip fierce…she tried to smile.” The road to recovery also included her mom taking time to heal from the c-section. After getting released from the hospital in October, Emerson came home on oxygen, steroids, and a pulse oximeter to measure blood oxygen levels and has been monitored closely by the doctors. She continues to improve but must stay out of the public eye through March 2020 as she is particularly susceptible to lung diseases.
She currently is receiving physical, occupational therapy and working closely with an audiologist. She has been allowed to be off oxygen at home, but it is still required to travel over mountain passes. Her family is taking her to Denver for visits with specialists once or twice a month to continue her recovery. She is receiving a vaccine that helps ward off lung diseases, such as RSV every 30 days for 5 months. Each dose of this shot is $2,500. The bills to assist with her birth, care and follow-up treatment have totaled 2 million. The family is working with their insurance company and the health providers to get as much relief as possible, but the care and costs continue.
The family is very grateful for all of the love and support they have already received during this traumatic experience. They are especially thankful for extended family that took off work and rearranged their schedules to come and support them, Emerson, and their older daughter. Emerson and her parents’ broader community of neighbors, churches, and friends (both past and present, near and far) have also given much by way of meals, listening ears, and moral support. This campaign is to help cover some of the medical costs and the continuing of care for #miraclebabyemerson.
Thank you so much for your generosity!
