This past Christmas Robert & I were introduced to a 29 year-old single mother of two young boys from the Congo. Sandra and her sons Moses (4 years), and Alex (2 years), are now part of our lives.  Over time, our relationship with Sandra has evolved and we are starting to learn more of her story. Sandra’s journey began in the Congo, one of the world’s most volatile regions. She was forced to leave her home and flee the country. While fleeing, she was run down by a truck of rebels and left for dead. She was found unconscious on the side of the road with open wounds. With no medical care, she was forced to continue to flee despite her condition. At various times, Sandra found herself lying among the dead in order to avoid detection. She would often have to run past the bodies of the people she knew in a desperate attempt to survive. Sandra did survive and escaped into Namibia in 2008, and lived in the United Nations refugee Camp “Osire,” for four years. In November, 2012, Sandra and her two boys were accepted as government assisted refugees and landed in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Sandra’s resilience and experience was such an inspiration to those she met when she arrived in Canada, that her story was featured by United Way. http://www.uwlm.ca/story/sandras-story-congo-canada-hope

Acclimating to life in Canada has not been easy for Sandra. She is a single mother with no family and no childcare to allow her to work. A few months ago, something happened to give Sandra some hope. She received confirmation that her mother and two of her siblings (10 & 17 years old) were alive and living in a refugee camp in Namibia.

For the past five months I have contacted over 50 churches requesting their assistance with the sponsorship of Sandra’s remaining family. Today (August 25th), I received confirmation that a church has been granted permission to bring Sandra’s mom and two siblings to Canada. In order to bring them to Canada, the government requires one year of living expenses to be guaranteed. We have until the end of September to raise the required $12,000 CDN.

It is my hope that through you, my friends, colleagues and clients, that we will be able to successfully raise these funds by the deadline of September 28th. 100% of the funds donated to the cause of bringing Sandra’s mother and siblings to Canada will go towards their living expenses and I will personally cover the cost of transaction fees charged by this website to process your donations. Any dollar amount will be graciously appreciated – no amount is too small.

I thank you in advance for taking the time to read about Sandra’s story and for considering to help reunite this family. Robert and I will host a welcome party for the family and all of you, so that they can meet everyone that helped bring them to Canada.  Please feel free to call (604-862-0094) or email (michellesutter@live.com) me with any questions you may have.
