Starting September 1st, I will be attending to the five-week fall residency at Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, MI, and one of ten painters to receive a scholarship funded by the Joan Mitchell Foundation. The purpose of this endeavor is to concentrate on art making without all the day-to-day distractions of life.

While this is a great honor to be accepted into this prestigious program, it presents some financial issues as well: first, for art supplies and materials such as wooden painting structures, some as large as 48” x 48”, paint and small readymade objects, and secondly, the monthly fiscal commitments to house and studio while I am away.

This Ox-Bow residency will open an intensive period of studio time to concept and execute a new body of mixed media paintings that breaks from its traditional two-dimensional format and expands upon my current themes of art and objecthood. The idea is to force the boundaries of painting from “painting on surface” to “painting as object.”

To cover the above expenses I am creating my own crowd-sourced fundraiser through FundRazr.

If you would like to donate toward my goal of $3000, I will thank each donor with rewards based on generosity.

Donations can also be made through credit card via Square or check.

Read my artist statement for more information about the proposed work:

Just as Duchamp turned a urinal on its side and changed our perception of a readymade object, my work blurs the line between art and design.
In my practice I combine modernist design objects, furniture and lighting into abstract mixed media paintings. Readymades act as an entry point into my work as well as to reference design, production and commodity.

Through abstraction I am able to capture the spirit of mid century modern design esthetics while creating a new original object. Incorporating actual objects into paintings creates a dialog between art and design as well as breaking the two dimensionality of a painting. The readymade presents a contrast of objecthood against representation; the subject Modern painters have struggled with throughout the twentieth century.

To reinforce objecthood, physicality is stressed in the paintings through various material uses and how they relate to the forms inspiring the work. This illustrates one paradox I find in painting; it can be referential of something or an object itself, yet these two opposing views are really inseparable.
