Help Us Complete Our Backyard Shed Conversion Into a Low-Income Rental Unit

Hi, my name is Elizabeth, and I’m a single mother living in the Bahamas. I’m raising my child on a low salary, which has become increasingly challenging after the loss of my mom during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was my rock and financial safety net, and her passing left a void that has been difficult to fill.

The rising cost of living—groceries, healthcare, and everyday essentials—has pushed me into the negative each month. It’s a constant battle to keep afloat, and every little bit counts. Despite these struggles, I’ve been determined to create a better future for us.

I started converting our backyard shed into a livable low-income rental unit. Inspired by the tiny homes I’ve seen on TV, I envisioned this space providing not only a bit of extra income but also a safe and affordable home for someone in need. Unfortunately, I ran out of funds before the project could be completed.

Right now, the shed is partially built but vulnerable. It has a damaged roof, no doors, or interior walls, and hurricane season is approaching. It’s built with Durock, which has already started to deteriorate from exposure. Last hurricane season, I prayed we’d be spared, and we were—but I can’t risk it again. If a hurricane passes through, everything I’ve put into this project could be lost.
