✮ Content note: This crowdfunding campaign contains descriptions of homophobic violence.
Background
NOTE: Names have been changed, and identifying details have been omitted in order to protect the safety and privacy of the fund recipients.
Saleh* left his home country in central Africa, along with his friend and fellow activist Amina* just before the pandemic was declared in March. For years, they had been fighting tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights in the face of intense persecution.
This included working to free queer and trans people who had been imprisoned, organizing funerals for those who had been killed in transphobic and homophobic attacks when the victims’ families were too afraid to do so, and founding an LGBTQ+ rights organization.
Their activism did not go unnoticed, and with each passing day they faced increasing incidents of physical and sexual violence from those intent on denying queer and trans people their basic human rights. Their lives were in danger so they fled to a nearby country. It must be said that this second country is also not a safe place for LGBTQ+ folks, but it did have the benefit of being a place where they were not known. Even in this new place, Amina and Saleh cannot safely leave their apartment and only go out when absolutely necessary. Their safety depends on their ability to remain anonymous and unnoticed, which is why this description cannot be more detailed than it is.
During their time away from home, Amina and Saleh realized that they can’t safely return home and decided to apply for asylum. However, due to the pandemic, the processes for applying for asylum with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) had ground to a halt (there are recent indications that their files may finally be starting to make their way through the system although it is unclear how long this will take).
The Attack
Recently while walking back to the apartment that he and Amina are sharing, Saleh was attacked by two men who shouted homophobic slurs and condemnations at him.
During the attack, he was knocked unconscious and sustained a serious injury to his nose. There is a high risk of very serious complications if he does not get the necessary operation on his nose very soon. He needs to find the funds to pay for the surgery and hasn’t been able to find any organization that can help him with this despite his best efforts.
Fundraising goal and timeline
The amount needed to cover the cost of surgery is $6,010 (CAN). Ideally we'd like to get to $10,000 (CAN) in order to help Saleh and Amina also pay for their basic needs during this extremely stressful time. Any amount you can contribute is deeply appreciated.
It’s essential that the funding goal be met as soon as possible. The more time passes before Saleh can have the operation, the higher the risk of infection or necrosis of the septum cartilage.
Broader impact of contributing to this campaign
Saleh and Amina are committed to continuing to fight for the rights of LGBTQ+ people in their home country from wherever they are in the world. Despite their own hardships during this intense period of displacement, they have continued to provide remote organizational work to support their colleagues and peers back home. Given Amina and Saleh’s important leadership roles in their country’s movement for LGBTQ+ liberation, covering the cost of Saleh’s surgery will not only be essential to his personal wellbeing, but also to the wellbeing of the movement.

Connection to campaign administrator
Julie came into contact with Saleh and Amina while she was a staff member at the Centre for Gender Advocacy in Montreal and can attest to the details described above. She has followed this case for over a year and has seen the countless efforts that these two incredible activists have made to try and get themselves to safety. While Amina and Saleh were initially able to get small grants from a few organizations, these funds have long since been used up.
Now, the combined factors of financial precarity, the homophobic attack on Saleh, and the pandemic are making the need to find additional support for them more important than ever. All who can are urged to contribute to this campaign. Please feel free to contact Julie with any questions and she will do her best to answer them while maintaining Amina and Saleh’s anonymity.
