Welcome to the Art for Sanctuary Emergency Moving fundraiser for Austin-based designer, artisan and cultural activist Nailah I. Sankofa. Last fall Nailah began helping tenants of her apartment community start a tenants association and lead efforts to improving conditions at the complex and residence rights.
As a result, Nailah was recently displaced from her apartment while preparing for her first solo exhibition, "Alaase: Messages Within the Conjure" currently on exhibit at the Carver Museum that opened on 10 August --- three days before she had to move from her apartment.
The negotiations over this case of retaliation between Nailah, attorneys and the property owners took place as she at a crucial point in completing works for her exhibition and coordinating other programming for her show that take place this fall. She was left with no time to adequately search for an affordable apartment in the city of Austin which left her sleeping in her moving cargo van for the past several days. A close friend and supporter found her an affordable apartment that she can move into by the end of the week.
