East TN Pit Bull Rescue pulled Tanner, a young bully breed mix, from a local municipal shelter. Tanner had a micro chip that told us he had been adopted from a DIFFERENT shelter previously. We contacted that shelter only to learn that not only did the adopter not want him, the humane society shelter he was adopted from did not want him back either. Thru all of this Tanner was in boarding while we waited for a foster home. FINALLY, we had a spot for him. Once Tanner was in the foster home, we soon realized that although Tanner was awesome...house and crate trained, dog and CAT friendy, and loved all people...he had issues with his rear legs. He was taken to Dr. Blackford - a board certified orthopedic surgeon that had help East TN Pit Bull Rescue with a couple of young guys in the past. She examined Tanner and took some xrays. It was determined that surgery was required on BOTH knees. The estimate give was $2600 per knee or $4500 to do both at the same time.
East TN Pit Bull Rescue is a small non-profit rescue with 501c3 status. This amount of money seems huge to us but there are a few things that helped us decide it would be worth it if we could come up with the money...FIRST there was Tanner! What a sweet and loving boy this is! He is wild and funny but he just wants to have fun. To watch him play is so conflicting because you can see he is uncomfortable and probably in out right pain. On the other hand, the smile on that face is priceless...you see Tanner grins like a opossum when he is happy!
Next is Dr. Blackford...before meeting her, ETPBR had a dog that needed a knee repair. We found a vet that would do it for $700. This proceedure involved using mono-filament to hold everything in place. The dog was a smallish 18 month old male. He was very active and in less than 4 months after the surgery, we were looking at having to have it done all over. We went to Dr Blackford on the next knee... she explained that an active dog and especially one over 40 pounds could not be repaired with the monofilament line. The line could not hold up to what the dog was putting on that knee. She demonstrated the metal plate that would be used...anchored to the bone with screws. Our dogs that have received treatment from Dr. Blackford have returned to their active lives. It is important that a young and active dog such as Tanner have a solid repair...that they be able to have a normal life.
LAST was just that...we want our dogs to have normal lives. The cost is small when weighed against Tanner's future well being.
